A battery is a great way to make sure you’re getting the most out of your electricity production. Any extra power you produce that isn’t used by your home will stay in the battery and won’t be sent back out to the National Grid. The electricity will be used up when your home is most in need, like when you’re using a lot of power or when the sun sets.
A battery could allow you to benefit from low-cost electricity, if you have a tariff that allows you to buy cheaper electricity during off peak hours (e.g. overnight). You can then charge your battery with cheap electricity overnight and use it during peak hours.

Glowb offers two types of battery – Homegrid and SolaX. Both are excellent batteries, but have different functionality and price-points.

SolaX batteries will charge from the solar or from the grid, and are automatically programmed to optimise your independence from the grid. These batteries can also charge and discharge to the grid, so that you can benefit from cheap off-peak tariffs (and make money by selling your excess power during peak periods!). Our team has chosen SolaX as Glowb’s standard battery of choice as it is straightforward to install, reliable, and has a very user friendly app.

Homegrid batteries are AC coupled lithium-ion batteries. This type of battery is new to the UK, although very popular in the USA. As they are AC coupled, these batteries can either be installed with or without a solar PV system. These batteries also include “islanding” functionality, meaning you can use your solar and battery system in a power cut. Finally, they are modular – which means that it is really easy to upgrade your battery in the future.
The cost will depend on the brand and the size of battery. Battery storage is measured in kWh.
SolaX batteries start with a 3kWh floor mounted system from £1170+
Homegrid is a floor mounted modular battery unit with 4.8kWh per stack (you can have up to 8 stacks). Prices start from £3960 for a 2 stack battery and go up to £13,750 for a whopping 8 x 4.8kWh stack.
