Which should I sort first: solar installation, EV charging or heat pump?

Reducing the carbon footprint of your home can feel like a big investment. While every investment you make will reduce your energy bills and carbon footprint over time, it can help to de-carbon your home in the right order. Here we take a look at the most logical order of installation for solar, EV and heating.

De-cabon the home

There are many ways to de-carbon your home, and many reasons why people are motivated to do so. You can make changes to the structure of your home through insulation. This involves making significant changes to your building such as internal or external wall insulation, replacing windows or simply using less energy.

You can change the energy you use to a renewable source. This means adding solar panels and low or zero-emission heating options such as an air-source or ground-source heat pump. This blog will help you feel confident that you’re considering renewable options in the right order. We know we’re biased, but it all starts with solar!

Why you should sort your solar installation first

If you’re planning to get a heat pump or add EV charging to your home then both of these use electricity. Therefore, it makes sense to create your renewable electricity system first before investing in other de-carbon options that use electricity.

By getting solar panels before heating or EV charging, you’re making sure that the energy you’re using is renewable and that you’re using energy from your panels before you take energy from the grid, which can often be a non-renewable source.

During summer months, with longer daylight hours, you may find you generate more energy than you use. You can sell this energy back to the grid under the Smart Export Guarantee or store it in a battery until you do need it to use it another time. In fact, our Glowb App can help you make the most of this by letting you know when is the best time to buy and sell to the grid plus how to use energy at the most optimal times.

Together, the solar panels and the app can help you optimise your savings so you can work on that next renewable energy step.

Heating or EV Charging, what’s next?

Once your solar system and battery is in place, you then need to decide what to do next to reduce the carbon from your home. If you’re planning to change your heating next, you have a couple of options.

A ground and air-source heat pump will help reduce the gas bills but you’ll need to get new radiators alongside the pump.  There is also new zero-emissions boiler technology coming out which doesn’t involve changing radiators. At the moment, most of the boiler options need water tanks and so aren’t suitable for all homes but this is changing.

Whichever heat source you choose, it might be worth holding off on any internal renovations until the new system is installed.

EV charging

If you own or are planning to own an EV car then charging it overnight while you’re not using it is a very smart move. Having an existing solar system will mean you are using renewable energy to charge your car.

Whether you buy an EV car next depends on your lifestyle. If you spend lots of time on the road, then it makes sense to get the car and charging point next. This will save you at the petrol pump and reduce your carbon footprint.

If you’re more likely to walk or cycle and only use your car occasionally, then it might make more sense to invest in heating next.

How else can you de-carbon the home?

Some other ways you can de-carbon your home is to look at the materials you use when renovating and your interior design. Buying furniture that’s built to last can help reduce your carbon footprint and overall waste. Many homeware stores will now share their manufacturing process and contribution to a circular economy.

There are also small actions to take to use less energy in the home. Our Glowb App helps our customers get real-time data on how they’re using energy. It also makes suggestions on what you can do to reduce your energy use.

Benefits of doing a solar installation first

When you get your solar panel installed before your heating or EV charging, you make the most of your future investments by fuelling them with solar energy. It reduces costs, reduces carbon and helps you invest in your home for the future.
