Debunking the top 5 solar panels myths in the UK

debunking solar panel myths in the uk

We hear lots of solar panel myths when talking to UK homeowners about what’s possible with solar. We know that to help get more of the UK switching to renewables we have a job to do in demystifying solar and all the myths that come with it, so here are the top five solar panel myths in the UK.

Myth 1: You can get a grant for solar panels

As much as we’d love the UK government to give out grants for solar panels, this simply isn’t the case. Lots of people we speak to report having seen misleading adverts on social media suggesting that UK homeowners could get a grant for solar panels. Then they get in touch and find out that it’s simply not true.

While there are some schemes open to homeowners who receive some benefits such as the ECO4 scheme, this is very limited. Instead, solar panels are VAT-free to help keep costs down and there are ways to finance solar panels to make the initial investment more affordable.

Ultimately, your solar panels are an investment that will eventually cover their costs and lower your energy bills. But we’re afraid there are no grants in the UK right now.

Myth 2: It’s not sunny enough for solar in the UK

While sunnier places like Portugal and Spain will indeed generate more energy than an overcast day in the UK, there is still enough daylight here to make solar a good investment.

Solar panels work by converting daylight, not heat, into electricity. The more sun they have, the more energy the panels will generate.  A solar installation will still create renewable energy in the UK – even in winter

Your solar panels will generate enough electricity to cover the initial cost and reduce your bills. How much electricity you can generate is based on the position of your roof, how many panels you can install and whether there are any obstructions, like chimneys, blocking the light for part of the day.

Myth 3: It takes 25 years for panels to pay for themselves

There are three factors in how long it takes for your solar panels to pay for themselves: how many panels you can fit onto your roof, how much energy you use, and whether you’re optimising your panels and battery.

The solar panels will more than pay for themselves and reduce your bills during the 25-year warranty of the panels. On average, we estimate it to take around seven years for an average home to recover the costs of installation. However, if you have one panel and a high energy usage then yes, it might take a lot longer to cover the cost of panel and installation.

This is why at Glowb, we will only install panels on roofs big enough to hold a minimum of six panels. Anything under this is unlikely to be cost-effective.

Myth 4: You can’t install solar on a flat roof

Many solar panel installation companies won’t install solar panels on a flat roof but Glowb is a specialist in flat roof solar panels. The good news is that homes with flat roofs don’t need planning permission for solar panels. The panels are also more hidden from view.

We put a special frame in place to hold the panels at an angle so that they get the best position to soak up all the rays. It doesn’t matter which way your roof is facing (a problem that some sloped roofs do have) as you’ll always get direct sunlight on a flat roof if there are no obstructions. As all our installers are in-house, everyone is trained on flat roof solar system installations.

Myth 5: Listed properties can’t have solar panels

Of course, you’ll need to check if you need planning permission, but most listed properties can have solar panels. The problem most homeowners have is how the panels look on the roof. If you have a listed property, it’s important that you choose an installer who will care about the look of your property as much as you do.

When it comes to a listed building, you may not be able to install panels on the roadside, but we can discuss this with you and design around the needs of your home. Overall, the most important thing you can do on any property – whether listed or not – is to make sure your panels look as good as possible.
